Karunagappally Sub division came in existence on the FN of 15 12 1986 as per the Government Order No. (Rt)2383/1986 Home dated 30 08 2016. This office is now functioning in the first floor of the newly constructed building on the southern side of Karunagappally Police Station Wef.24 06 2010.

Jurisdiction
Karunagappally Sub division comprised of area under Karunagappally and Kunnathoor Taluk in which there were three circles. On bifurcation of Kollam District in two police Districts as Kollam City and Kollam Rural Vide GO(MS) No.64/2011 Home dated 26 02 2011, Sasthamcotta Circle, consisting of Sasthamcotta police station and Sooranadu Police stations is detached from this Sub Division and attached to the jurisdiction of Kottarakkara Sub division and Sakthikulanagara police station has been shifted to Kollam Subdivision. At present Karunagappally Sub Division comprises Karunagappally Taluk consisting two circles Karunagappally and Chavara. Karunagappally Circle consists Karunagappally PS and Oachira PS, Chavara Circle consists Chavara PS and Thekkumbghagom PS.
